Our first morning in Landshut, Karina dropped us off
downtown to do some exploring while she studied for her exams. Landshut is a
quaint small town with brick roads and buildings painted in beautiful pastel
colors. Karina suggested we visit the castle on the top of the hill and she mentioned
that the tallest brick tower in the world was in Landshut! As Blake and I were
walking to the castle, we stumbled upon the tall brick bell tower Karina had
told us about. Although it looked big from the ground, the view of town from
the castle on the hill allowed us to really appreciate the impressive
architecture of this and its bell tower. Due to its immense size, it stands out
as the main focal point of photos of the entire town. Blake and I walked around
the castle’s grounds but decided to forgo a tour of the inside as they were
only giving tours in German. Upon descending back into the main part of town in
Landshut, I told Blake that every single winter, without fail, I have fallen
down at least one time because of ice. I figured this couldn’t happen in only
two weeks in temperate Europe. However, a few minutes later Blake let go of my
hand for an instant and down to the ground I went, slipping on a small patch of
melting snow and ice. For lunch, we stopped at a Biergarten near the Isar river.
The restaurant was a very traditional German restaurant with long picnic style
seating and delicious German food like currywurst.

The most interesting feature
of the biergarten was the chandeliers which were wrapped in hops. After eating,
Blake and I decided to walk back to Karina’s apartment for some hot tea. Around
7 pm, Karina, Karina’s boyfriend, Roland, Karina’s brother, Julia, Karina’s
roommate, Blake and I headed to dinner at Karina’s mom’s apartment about an
hour away from Landshut. We had good food and good conversation which made the
time pass quickly and soon we were on our way home to go to bed.
